Professional Emergency and Exit Light
Installation in Connecticut

Emergency lights and exit signs are required in every Connecticut commercial building. When the power goes out during a fire or an electrical failure, occupants need to find the way out. The illuminated exit signs show them where the doors are. The emergency lights show them the path to get there. Royal Fire Protection has installed emergency lighting in Connecticut commercial buildings since 2023. New installations, retrofits, replacements after failed inspections, and ongoing annual testing.

There are two basic categories of egress lighting. Exit signs identify the door to the protected egress path. They have to be illuminated continuously, with battery backup for when the building loses power. Emergency lights illuminate the egress path itself. They activate automatically on loss of normal power. Royal Fire Protection installs the right unit for each location, sized correctly for the egress path and located where it provides the coverage NFPA 101 requires.

Connecticut buildings get cited for emergency lighting problems more often than for almost any other code issue. Bulbs burn out. Batteries fail. Test buttons get pressed and the unit fails to illuminate. Old fluorescent exit signs flicker or dim. Royal Fire Protection installs units that meet current code, performs the required testing intervals, and replaces failing units before they cause inspection problems.

New Emergency and Exit Light Installation

New installation starts with a building walkthrough to identify every required emergency lighting location. The Connecticut fire code follows NFPA 101 for egress lighting. Exit signs are required at every exit door, at every intersection in the egress path where the exit direction might be unclear, and along the egress path at intervals that keep the next sign visible from the previous one. Royal Fire Protection identifies every required location and specifies the right unit for each.

LED technology has changed emergency lighting installation. Modern combo units integrate the exit sign with adjustable emergency light heads, an internal battery pack with self-test functions, and LED illumination that lasts longer than fluorescent or incandescent technology. Royal Fire Protection installs LED units for new installations and most retrofits. The units are listed for fire service and meet the current Connecticut amendments to NFPA 101.

Coverage calculations determine how many units a building needs. NFPA 101 specifies minimum illumination of one foot-candle along the egress path, with the lowest point not less than 0.1 foot-candle. The lighting has to come on automatically when normal power fails and stay on for 90 minutes. Royal Fire Protection runs the coverage calculation room by room, places units at proper spacing, and verifies the design meets the code minimum at every point on the egress path.

Monthly Testing and Annual Maintenance

NFPA 101 requires monthly testing of every emergency lighting unit and exit sign. The 30-second test verifies the battery activates the lights when normal power fails. Royal Fire Protection trains building maintenance staff on the monthly testing procedure or performs the testing on a service contract for clients who prefer that arrangement.

The annual test goes longer. NFPA 101 requires a 90-minute full discharge test once per year. The unit gets disconnected from utility power and the lights have to stay on for the full 90 minutes at the required illumination level. Royal Fire Protection performs annual 90-minute testing and replaces batteries or full units when needed.

Service includes battery replacement, bulb replacement, and full unit replacement when older models are beyond economical repair. When the annual test reveals a failed or weak battery, replacement is straightforward. Royal Fire Protection stocks common units and batteries at the Prospect shop for fast turnaround.

Why Emergency Lighting Quality Matters in Connecticut

A failed exit sign during a real emergency is a problem the building owner cannot recover from. Occupants in a smoky stairwell looking for the next exit sign have seconds to make a decision. If the sign is dark, they go the wrong direction. Connecticut fire marshals know this, which is why emergency lighting is one of the most heavily inspected items on their walkthrough.

Connecticut fire prevention codes are clear on the requirements but the enforcement varies by jurisdiction. Some local fire marshals walk every floor and test every unit. Either way, a building with consistently working emergency lighting passes inspection. Citations require corrective action within a defined time frame, with reinspection fees that add up quickly.

Battery technology selection matters for long-term cost of ownership. Cheap units use generic batteries that fail in three years. Quality units use better batteries that last six to eight years. The service cost difference over the building life is substantial. Royal Fire Protection specifies units with quality battery packs that minimize battery replacement frequency and deliver reliable egress lighting when it actually matters.

90-Minute Annual Test

Every emergency lighting installation includes coverage calculations and annual 90-minute full discharge testing. Battery replacement scheduled before failure. Documentation for fire marshal review.
